Topsail Island

If you are looking for a quiet, family-oriented beach away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Topsail Island is the place. Topsail Island (pronounced Top'-sul by the locals) is approximately 25 miles long and is rumored to have been a hangout for pirates and most notoriously, Blackbeard. The Island contains three towns and is located in two counties. South of Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville and north of Wilmington, Topsail Island's peaceful beauty enraptures visitors. Quiet and serene, it is only a short trip to the numerous shopping, cultural and business districts of both Wilmington and Jacksonville. Retired military personnel are only a short drive to the back gate of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
If you arrive from the Jacksonville area on route 210 through Sneads Ferry, you cross the high bridge into the north side of the island. North Topsail Beach sits at the top of the island and has less commercialization and more privacy than Surf City and Topsail Beach to the south. As you drive south on route 210 from North Topsail Beach, you are in Surf City, the center of the island and the island's activities. Here you will find more restaurants, shopping and other business services. If you enter Topsail Island from the Wilmington area, you will drive down route 50 over the swing bridge in Surf City. Head south of route 50 and the swing bridge on South Shore Drive and you will eventually find yourself in the town of Topsail Beach, a small but proud and thriving island community.
